- Story Text: New electric rickshaws greeted tourists arriving in the Philippines' Boracay on Saturday (October 27) getting thumbs ups from visitors but concerns from drivers as the island re-opens to the public following its six-month clean-up and makeover.
Boracay's local government in April initially ordered the complete phase out of all 500 motorized rickshaws, locally known as "tricycles" plying the island's roads, by the end of its six-month island closure and environment rehabilitation. It has since extended the deadline for local drivers to switch to electric vehicles by the end of the year.
Tourists welcomed the green initiative, but drivers complain of higher costs and losing hours of work because of the vehicle's batteries need to be charged for four hours.
An average motorized rickshaw driver earns around P700 (13 USD) a day and a 4-seater unit costs P400,000 (7500 USD). Its electric counterpart costs twice as much with double the capacity. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
