- Story Text: Don Ward, the 53-year-old famed shoe shiner on 47th St and 6th Avenue in New York City, can't wait for America to be 'great again.'
What do the upcoming midterm elections mean to him?
"Done with Trump," he said. "That's what it means to me. We'll survive two more years."
In between comments lobbed at potential customers like, "Shoe lives matter," and "Yeah, you voted for Trump" and "Let's do the shoes. Let's go. Let's make 'em great again," Ward hopes that there will be less divisiveness in an already tense political landscape.
"They've gotta join together," he said. "One party for one cause. It's like, when you split parties, you split people. And you could feel the tension. I could feel it. I'm on this corner every day. It's so diverse, difference of opinions. And it's like, you could feel the difference. This country has changed so much since I grew up in it. I just feel that when they talk about great again? Well let's do something great. One person said, when wasn't America great? I can give you a few stories but, you know, I want to live at least one more year."
Ward's had his shoe stand on the same corner for 18 years, and at Grand Central for seven years before that. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
