- Story Text: Five-year old cancer patient Lara Mostafa smiles widely as she runs her fingers through her brand-new wig which she had fixed at a local barber shop in Cairo.
Mostafa's parents enlisted the help of Sameh Sallam, a barber who provides children suffering from cancer with wigs to help boost their morale.
After months of painful chemotherapy sessions, and eventual hair loss, Mostafa can now style her long black locks to her liking.
Sallam provides the service for free and with the help of his father finds medically appropriate fibre wigs to fit onto patients.
He decided to start the initiative after stumbling upon a social media video showing a happy child with cancer who had just received a new wig.
Mostafa had been really affected when she lost her hair to treatment, her father said.
"The psychological treatment represents 50 percent of cancer treatment. The morale of the child is extremely important for the treatment process," said Mostafa Mohamed.
Sallam has not received any help from major cancer institutions but has so far helped 10 children and plans to increase that number. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
