- Story Text: Kevin Hart, Pharrell Williams and Minnie Driver were amongst the celebrities who turned out Wednesday (November 21) to serve Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless in downtown Los Angeles.
Hart also made a $50,000 donation to the Los Angeles Mission who run the annual event after his daughter suggested it.
"My daughter goes, 'You know dad, Thanksgiving is here but this year why don't we try to do something different, why don't we help and we go and provide Thanksgiving for others?'" He told Reuters. "So I said, 'You know baby, that's a good idea.' So we donated $50,000 to the Mission and came down, I said, 'Let's go hand on and not only provide some food but some care packages.'"
Hart's charity, Cooking with Hart, also donated hygiene kits to the Mission.
Driver brought her son, Henry, along to help out. "We come every year," she told Reuters. "What is that great saying? It's better to build a boy than mend a man and this is part of his building, you know? You give back, no matter what. No matter if you have a little, you give when you can."
The event on the city's Skid Row served a hot meal to over 3,500 homeless men, women and children. The charity, established in 1936, offers a lifeline to those living in poverty or on the streets.
Mission president Herb Smith said: "We like to do this because it lets people in the community see a little bit more about what we do every day, the community that we serve, through volunteers and donors, the press that gets the chance to raise the issue of homelessness in our community, to put a real face to it and really it's just to say thank you for the opportunity that we have to serve people."
During the last year, the LA Mission has served 400,000 meals to those in need. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
