- Story Text:A group of migrants have stopped eating in Tijuana (November 30), joining a hunger strike in an effort to drum up pressure on U.S. authorities to hear their case for asylum in the United States.
It comes as temperatures drop in Mexico's northern border city, frustrating migrants who are forced to endure wet weather and an impending winter. They complain the conditions at the shelter at sub-human.
Many of these families are from Honduras and fled gang violence and economic hardship for what they hoped were better opportunities in the U.S.
But President Donald Trump has called the migrants 'an invasion,' deployed the U.S. military to the southern border, and beseeched Mexico to send them back to where they came from.
The Trump administration has been in talks with the Mexican government about keeping the migrants in Mexico while their asylum claims are processed by U.S. courts.
That would break long-standing practice, which allowed asylum-seekers to remain in the United States while their case plays out. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
