- Story Text: Romania has shrugged off its communist past to emerge as a powerhouse of cinema over the last two decades, with many decorated directors in recent years being women.
Among them is Anca Damian, whose new film 'Moon Hotel Kabul' has already netted her the best director prize at the Warsaw International Film Festival.
Speaking before the Bucharest premiere of the film, Damian said there was evidence of a "wind of changes" in the industry, where a decade ago she felt overlooked, or as she puts it - "transparent".
Ada Solomon, one of Europe's leading film producers and the woman behind some of the most critically-acclaimed dramas of recent years, is at the forefront of an increasing number of female producers and directors working in Romania.
Much has been made about the Romanian New Wave, a genre of naturalistic and unflinching films that have been consistently winning top prizes such as the Palme d'Or in Cannes and awards at the Berlin and Venice festivals.
Solomon, two of whose films have won prizes at the Berlinale, says women in the industry were still hesitant to break boundaries due to "self-censorship".
Work by female directors is taking centre stage at the 13th annual Making Waves festival in New York, with a section to films directed by women, including Damian and this year's Berlin Golden Bear winner "Touch Me Not" by Adina Pintilie. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
