- Story Text: Zookeepers began the arduous task of counting more than 700 different species of animal at London zoo's annual stocktake on Thursday (January 3).
The zoo keeps records of all animals great and small, from Sumatran Tigers Jae Jae and Melati to squirrel monkeys and pygmy goats, as a requirement of its operating licence.
"We have got a lot of different species and within each species we have a lot of different individuals with a lot of different behaviours. So one, being able to make sure that we can see them, that we don't double count them, can be quite challenging," Animal Operations Manager Angela Ryan said.
Staff have to use imaginative techniques to count the total of animals, recorded at 19,289 during the 2018 count.
The audit takes a week to complete and the information collated is shared with other zoos around the world using a database to aid breeding and conservation programmes to protect endangered species. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
