- Story Text: India beat Pakistan by 5.5 goals in the world cup
qualifier polo match in the northwestern city of Jaipur on
Sunday (October 1)
Indian polo team qualified for the World Cup
tournament to be played in Melbourne next year when it beat
Pakistan convincingly by 11-5.5 goals on Sunday (October 1). A
large number of people gathered at the Rambagh Polo Grounds in
the northwestern city of Jaipur to witness the finals of the
Baleno World Cup polo play-off for Zone D.
India topped the five team league with eight points
winning all their four matches.This is the second time that
India will be playing in the final round. They had earlier
figured in 1995 in Zurich and had finished fifth.Powered by
Shamsheer Ali's five goals and Dhuruvpal Godara's four goals,
Indians kept up the pressure on their traditional rivals from
the beginning. Navjeet Sandhu and Ajay Ahlawat scored one
goal each for India.
Godara, who scored 23 goals in the tournament, was
adjudged the most valuable player.
For Pakistan, four goal handicapper Shah Shamyl Alam and
three goaler Raja Samiullah each scored two goals for
Pakistan, while Hissam Ali Hyder struck one.Indians were
elated that they had beaten Pakistan to enter the World Cup.
"They (Pakistanis) also played like the tigers. We also
did our best. The victory has been a dream come true for me.

Cup. For me this has been a treat," said Ajay Ahlawat, an
Indian player. The Pakistanis said they were handicapped after
their horses got injured. Pakistanis had to play with Indian
horses.
"The Indian team really played well, and there was a

We did not have the habit of playing with these horses. Had we
played with our horses, the result would have been different,"
said Haider Ali, a Pakistani player.
India ramained unbeaten in the five-team qualifying
tournament. Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand and Singapore
were the
other teams in the Group D.Rajasthan state governor Anshuman
