- Story Text: A passenger train crashed into a goods train at Penneconda in India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh early on Tuesday (May 22), killing at least six and injuring several others.
Three carriage, one sleeper class coach and two second-class coaches of the Bangalore-bound Hampi Express derailed due to the collision. One of the coaches was engulfed in flames.
The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, but as per media reports, it seems that the driver of the passenger train overshot the signal.
Meanwhile, Indian Railways Public Relations Officer (PRO), Anil Saxena, said that a team of railway doctors has arrived at the collision site to attend to the injured passengers and the rescue operations are in full swing.
"Soon after the accident, the railway officials reached the site and since this area comes under the Bangalore division of the southwestern railways, so the division railway manager from Bangalore and other officials have reached the spot. The relief and rescue operations have already begun. Our team of railway doctors have also arrived along with a medical train and they are attending to the injured passengers," he said.
Saxena said that about 30 passengers were injured and the federal Railway Minister, Mukul Roy, who is in Kolkata, is rushing to the spot to monitor the situation.
"As of now, we have heard that six people have been killed and 30 passengers are injured. The federal Railway Minister, Mukul Roy, who was scheduled to arrive in New Delhi from Kolkata to participate in the last day of the budget session and he has now changed his programme and is now leaving for Bangalore so that he can be present at the accident site," he said.
India's railway network is one of the world's largest. But decades of low investment, a patchy safety record as a result of ageing infrastructure and frequent delays mean India has fallen far behind China in building a network fit for Asia's third-largest economy.
