- Story Text: A pair of ancient drums has come alive in a southern Indian temple.
The authorities of a southern Hindu temple have repaired a four-century-old pair of drums to revive an ancient tradition of welcoming guests to the beating of drums.
The 350-year-old drums were almost forgotten for the last 50 years.
"Both the drums are 350 years old. For the past 50 years they were not used and were dumped in a dark room.
Now we gave a new life to them and repaired them," said P.Bhaskaran, joint commissioner of the Rameswaram temple trust.
Legend goes that centuries ago, during the rule of King Sethupathy, the temple used to send priests to north India to bring water from the holy Ganges.
The priests used to make the arduous journey on foot and took months and years to complete their mission.
It is believed that the Hindu warrior God Lord Rama prayed to Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction, at Rameswaram.
Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visit the temple every year. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
