- Story Text: In a heartwarming incident, locals in northeast India rescued a female elephant calf on Monday (May 06) after she fell in a ditch and transported her to the nearby Kaziranga national park for medical treatment.
According to locals, the baby elephant lagged behind from its herd and fell in a ditch, filled with water. Responding to the cries of the calf, two elephants from the herd rushed towards to ditch and made several attempts to rescue the calf, but in vain.
The incident which happened in Amolighat district of India's northeastern Assam state soon gathered the attention of the locals, who first fired some gun shots in the air to disperse the two elephants.
A group of over 20 locals then rushed to the aid of the calf and using ropes they pulled her clear from the ditch.
"All the villagers came together to pull this elephant calf out of the ditch. She was in a bad condition and we could not bare the sight of a baby dying in that ditch and that is why we rushed to pull her from the ditch," said Shyam Baruwa, a local villager.
The calf, which was later taken for medical treatment was stable after receiving fluids and food.
Experts have repeatedly opined that massive deforestation, poaching and encroachment in forest corridors have forced elephants to move out of their natural habitats in search of food and water.
India has over 50 percent of the world's Asiatic elephant population. But their number has dwindled in recent years. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
