- Story Text: An Indian woman develops new-age aerobics.
While most aerobics-fans head to modern sports centres for an
exercise class, an Indian classical dancer in eastern Kolkata brings together her creative energies to transform aerobics into an artistic medium.
Nandini Sinha, the 38-year old Kathak dancer, has combined dancing,
music, yoga and aerobics to formulate a new form of aerobics called
"classical aerobics".
Aerobic is a low-intensity, sustained activity that relies on oxygen for energy. This activity builds endurance, burns fat and conditions the cardiovascular system.
Increased oxygen consumption promotes overall health and increases
metabolism resulting in burning extra fat stores.
Sinha's aerobics is different and relies on as much knowledge of Indian culture and traditions, as breathing techniques. "Classical aerobics, a coinage which I have coined for a kind of a package which is going to give you the glimpse of a whole lot of activities coupled with breathing exercises. For example it has dancing, it has yoga, it has breathing, it has voice culture, it has a lot of stretching exercises, it has both aquatic and terrestrial body
languages, floor exercises. So, it is a very holistic attitude to breathing and that will lead to a very qualitative lifestyle,"
explains Sinha.
Sinha, a globe trotter, said she realised the importance of the
knowledge of one's own country, its culture and traditions to stand up to others, and eventually came up with the concept of classical aerobics.
The participants attending the workshop say, they too discovered a new zeal and confidence.
"Joining classical aerobics has helped me a lot. I am suffering
from thyroid and never had the energy to do anything or to concentrate upon anything. But, after doing this all my energies have come back and I am confident that I can overcome my illness also," said Saroj, a
participant.
In addition to improving the physical condition, the breathing
exercises through Indian classical music, be it a holy song or a folk song, has induced many of the participants to explore Indian music. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
