- Story Text: The commercial bus service between India's eastern city of Calcutta and Bangladeshi capital Dhaka has begun with the arrival of two buses from Bangladesh.
Two multi-coloured luxury buses arrived from the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka at India's eastern city of Calcutta on Monday (July 5), officially beginning a regular commercial bus service between the two countries.
"I enjoyed the journey.I think more such buses should be introduced. There are many people who want to come," said Fatima (Eds: one name), a resident of Dhaka.
A civic reception was also held to honour the first batch of passengers from Dhaka.
Mohammad Ismail, another visitor from across the border, said the journey time could be reduced by two hours if custom procedures were simplified.
"It took about two hours at customs.I think normal journey time will be about 10 hours in subsequent trips," Ismail said.
The bus service was inaugurated on June 18 this year by Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka.
Two buses from either side carrying 40 passengers each will run everyday between the two cities and cover a distance of 360 km (223 miles).
The bus fare has been fixed at 22 U.S.dollars for a round trip.
Some 3,000 Bangladeshis travel to Calcutta every day for a range of purposes, including medical treatment and seeing religious or historic places. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
