- Story Text: Rigourous efforts by forest and administrative officials paid off, after an elephant calf that fell into a well was rescued in India's eastern state of Jharkhand on Thursday (January 17).
The elephant calf, whose age is estimated at eight to nine months, supposedly got separated from its herd that has been spotted around Jojodih village under Bundu block and strayed into the well early on Wednesday (January 16).
Alerted by the calf's trumpeting, villagers gathered around the well and informed forest officials.
Administrative and forest officials arrived with earthmoving vehicles and began digging a slanting passage to help the elephant calf escape.
After five hours of constant digging, the anxious elephant calf was finally seen crawling towards the passage amid massive cheering from locals crowding around the well to watch.
The elephant calf soon slipped into the passage and much to the surprise of the salvage operation officials, chased the bulldozer digging its rescue pit, becoming stuck below the vehicle's wheels for a few minutes.
Administrative officials tilted the vehicle on one side to allow the elephant calf to escape.
The crowd of villagers and on lookers clapped and hooted in amazement as the elephant leaped out of the passage and ran towards the forest area to seek refuge.
Locals were seen chasing the elephant calf in order to prevent it from heading towards the village. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
