INDIA: CRICKET - England seek better use of power plays in must-win match against West Indies
- Title: INDIA: CRICKET - England seek better use of power plays in must-win match against West Indies
- Date: 16th March 2011
- Summary: CHENNAI, TAMIL NADU, INDIA (MARCH 15, 2011) (ANI-NO ACCESS BBC) JONATHAN TROTT, ENGLISH BATSMAN, SITTING AT A NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (English) JONATHAN TROTT, ENGLISH BATSMAN, SAYING: "On the slower trickier wickets, the ones that turn a bit and especially if we face spinners in the power play (unclear) generally, you can't get it behind you, where the fielders are anyway. So with the seamers you can probably use the pace a bit more. I think maybe trying to hit it more on the ground I think if you can find the gaps in the outfield, I think that is a good thing. But, it's about weighing up the options and what fielders are out, what your strengths are as a batsman, where your boundary options are really." TROTT LISTENING (SOUNDBITE) (English) JONATHAN TROTT, ENGLISH BATSMAN, SAYING: "Yeah it's obviously nothing we can do. Well our attention has got to be on the game coming against West Indies. I think it would be foolish if we take our eyes off the match, we have got ourselves into this position, it's up to us to get into position where we can go through. It is simple, obviously there are four knockout games for us and three for everyone else, so it's no problem." TROTT SITTING (SOUNDBITE) (English) JONATHAN TROTT, ENGLISH BATSMAN, SAYING: "It's not about being fresh, I think you have got to realise where we are, what we are doing and who we are playing for. You are in the World Cup playing for England. There are millions of people back home and around the world who would give anything to be able to be in the position we are. So, we've got four games left, hopefully this winter that's all it is really. Whatever has happened in the past, the amount of cricket we have played, I think we have got a few days off now, and obviously conditions are hot here in Chennai and quite humid. It would be foolish to look too far ahead and also look back how much on cricket we have played, and it's all about the match day." TROTT GOING

- Story Text: English batsman Jonathan Trott said on Tuesday (March 15) that better use of power-plays was something his team should concentrate on in their match against the West Indies.
England play former champions the West Indies on Thursday (March 17) in a game they must win to reach the quarter-finals, provided South Africa beat Bangladesh.
Trott said that there were better ways to use the pace of the powerplay to find spaces between fielders, especially when facing seam bowling.
The team that has provided some exciting play in the tournament are now risking an early exit, due mainly to their inconsistency.
Andrew Strauss's team tied their match with India but were felled by Ireland and Bangladesh, and now find themselves having to beat the West Indies.
"Our attention has got to be on the game coming against West Indies," said Trott. "I think it would be foolish if we take our eyes off the match, we have got ourselves into this position, it's up to us to get into position where we can go through. It is simple, obviously there are four knockout games for us and three for everyone else, so it's no problem."
Trott shrugged off suggestions that the England team are played-out after the Ashes series and one day matches in Australia before the World Cup. He said the stakes were enough to inspire the team.
"I think you have got to realise where we are, what we are doing and who we are playing for," he said. "You are in the World Cup playing for England. There are millions of people back home and around the world who would give anything to be able to be in the position we are."
Trott said the team were now focussed on the West Indies match to the exclusion of anything else.
"We've got four games left, hopefully this winter that's all it is really. Whatever has happened in the past, the amount of cricket we have played, I think we have got a few days off now, and obviously conditions are hot here in Chennai and quite humid. It would be foolish to look too far ahead and also look back how much on cricket we have played, and it's all about the match day."
England is in Group B along with India, West Indies, Ireland, Bangladesh, South Africa and Netherlands.
