- Story Text: Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni on Monday (October 30) said Rome and New Delhi should reignite their diplomatic relations to take bilateral ties to new heights.
Gentiloni, on a two-day visit aimed at improving ties with New Delhi, was speaking after holding delegation-level talks with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
Bilateral relations between the two countries went frosty in recent years, after two Indian fishermen were allegedly shot in 2012 by two Italian marines, who were protecting a merchant ship and mistook them for pirates.
Last year, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in Italy's favour and asked India to release one of the Italian marines detained in the Italian Embassy in New Delhi. The other marine had already returned to Italy due to health problems.
During a joint conference with Modi, Gentiloni said better diplomatic relations between the two countries would further enhance their economic relations.
India is Italy's fifth largest trading partner in the EU and the bilateral trade between the two countries reached $8.7 billion in 2016. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
