- Story Text: Known as "The Father of Hybrid Rice" in Chinese households, Yuan Longping is a contender for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
The 84-year old agricultural scientist developed the world's first rice hybrid in 1974 and has devoted his time since then to developing "super rice" capable of producing ever-increasing yields.
Speaking at a news conference in 2011, Yuan said it was important to improve yields for such a main food source.
"It is the staple food for more than half of the world's population and more than 60 percent of China's population. Therefore, it is of great importance to improve rice output and guarantee China's food security," he said.
Yuan is believed to be one of 278 nominees for the Prize which will be announced on October 10.
