- Story Text: On the eve of a court ruling, a relative of one of the four accused in the case of gang-rape that shook India last year said on Monday (September 9) she expected a punishing verdict.
An Indian court is expected to pronounce its verdict in the fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist last December on Tuesday (September 10).
The crime raised questions over women's safety in India and sparked debate over how men treat women all over the country. Ten of thousands of urban Indians took to the streets to protest.
The sister-in-law of Mukesh Singh, one of the accused, said the family was ready to hear the verdict, however tough it may be.
"I do not know what the verdict will be. If I ask the police to leave him in peace will they listen to me ? The juvenile in the case has got three years of punishment, now it is up to the court to give whatever punishment they want to give to the other accused. The family just cannot do anything about it," Singh's sister in law said. She declined to give her full name.
Mukesh Singh and his older brother Ram Singh have both been charged with rape and murder.
The forensic report found that DNA tests on bloodstains from underwear worn by the main accused, Ram Singh, matched those of the victim. Another test done on a swab taken from her body showed his DNA signature.
Ram Singh was found hanging from the ceiling in his cell at the Jail where all five accused were being kept.
Mukesh will hear his fate on Tuesday.
Most sex crimes in India go unreported, many offenders go unpunished, and the wheels of justice turn slowly, according to social activists who say that successive governments have done little to ensure the safety of women.
Despite stringent laws, girls and women in largely patriarchal India face a barrage of threats and these include forced marriage, rape, dowry-related murder, domestic violence and also human trafficking. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
