- Story Text: China's state television reads out a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping saying the Chinese people will always remember the "outstanding contributions" Nelson Mandela made to China-South Africa relations.
Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a message of condolence to the family of South African anti-apartheid hero, Nelson Mandela's on Friday (December 6), praising his "outstanding contributions" to China-South Africa relations, state media reported.
"On behalf of the Chinese government, the Chinese people and himself, President Xi Jinping expresses deep regret over the passing of Mandela, and sends sincere condolences to Mandela's family. Xi Jinping says in a message of condolence that Mr. Mandela was a world renowned politician, led the South African people to the victory of anti-apartheid struggle after hard and extraordinary effort over a long period of time and made historic contributions to the birth and development of new South Africa. Xi Jinping says Mr. Mandela was one of the founders of the China-South Africa relations. He had visited China twice, and actively pushed for friendly cooperation in various areas between the two countries. The Chinese people will always remember his outstanding contributions to the China-South Africa relationship and the course of progress of mankind," an anchor of China's state television CCTV read of Xi's message.
Mandela died peacefully at home at the age of 95 on Thursday (December 5) after months fighting a lung infection, leaving his nation and the world in mourning for a man revered as a moral giant.
