- Story Text: India's Supreme Court on Wednesday (January 14) allowed Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre, who had been charged in connection with the killing of two fishermen in 2012, to stay in his home country for three more months on medical grounds.
Latorre, who underwent heart surgery on January 5, had filed a petition seeking an extension of his stay in Italy on January 7.
Latorre's lawyer KTS Tulsi said the court granted him an extension of three months.
"The Supreme Court has been pleased to grant extension of three months' time to the Italian marine, Mr. Latorre on the ground that he has undergone surgery, heart surgery, on the 5th of January and therefore according to medical advice given to him, it is not possible for him to undertake the journey as he has been prescribed complete bed rest. So therefore the Supreme Court has been pleased to grant extension of three months' time. After a period of three months the marine will have to report back in India and report to the Supreme Court," he told reporters outside the court.
The Supreme Court allowed Latorre to go home on September 12, 2014, as he was ill.
Latorre and another marine, Salvatore Girone, part of a military security team protecting the tanker 'Enrica Lexie' from piracy, are accused of shooting two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala in February 2012.
The two men deny killing anyone or aiming directly at the fishing boat. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
