- Story Text: Floodwaters from the heavy rainfall in India's eastern Bihar state brought life to a standstill for the residents on Sunday (September 25).
Houses and cars were submerged under floodwaters which worsened after the Indrapuri barrage released huge volumes of floodwaters from the Sone River.
Anupam Kumar, the District Administrator of Rohtas, said operations in some areas were still ongoing.
"We received information from two places that there are people in Nauhatta and Tilouthu. Our operation began last night and so far we have rescued 38 people from Tilouthu and our team is also in Nauhatta and the rescue operation is ongoing there," he said.
The adjoining areas near the river were flooded, forcing residents to climb to the roofs of their houses, in order to be rescued.
Rescue teams were seen struggling in floodwater as they found it difficult to reach out to the stranded locals.
Large areas of agricultural land were also destroyed.
In capital Patna city, where continuous rainfall brought life to a halt.
Residents whose houses were flooded blamed it on bad governance.
"This is the result of four hours of rain and it has destroyed our house. It has become difficult for us to move out of the house. The car is submerged in floodwaters. Our guests are sitting outside the house. Nobody is able to enter the area. The civic authorities do not pump the water and the water does not drain out properly, good governance has turned into bad governance," resident Dhirendra Kumar said.
The floods also affected driving, as several vehicles broke down on the roads.
The monsoon this year caused heavy floods and damage in several parts of northern India. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
