- Story Text: Heavy rains in India's northeastern state of Assam on Thursday (September 4) caused water levels in the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries to rise above danger level, forcing animals in wildlife sanctuaries to flee to higher ground .
Most of the Kaziranga National Park, home to more than half of the world's population of one-horned rhinoceros, is under water and at least two rhino calves have drowned.
Situation in Pabitar wild life sanctuary is no different.
Mukul Tamuli, range officer of Pabitar wild life sanctuary said animals are moving to elevated grounds and taking shelter in dry areas to escape floods.
More than a million people have been affected by floods after the Brahmaputra burst its banks. So far, 15 people have been killed and 120,000 ha (300,000 acres) of farmland submerged.
Since the monsoon began in South Asia in June, more than 1,000 people have died in floods, with most of the casualties recorded in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh in July. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
