- Story Text: Fire swept through a six-storey market complex in India's eastern Kolkata city on Wednesday (February 27), as fire fighters struggled to douse the inferno.
Fire broke out in Surya Sen Market in Sealdah area around 3.00 am in the morning and caused extensive damage to property.
Fire-fighters smashed windows to evacuate people down ladders and with sheets from upper floors. Other victims were taken on stretchers.
At least 18 fire tenders immediately rushed to the spot to douse the fire.
A victim, Ayandrali Dutta said that her entire office was destroyed in the fire.
"My entire office on the first floor has been burnt. All my files and all my accounts have been burnt. My husband is a lawyer," said Dutta.
Wisps of smoke rose from the site of the incident as the people mourned over the loss of their property.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
No official has confirmed the number of people dead and injured in the inferno.
Fire safety regulations are lax, rarely implemented and not periodically reviewed in most places in the country. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
