- Story Text: French President Nicolas Sarkozy joins celebrations of the Republic Day in India and takes time off to visit the world renowned Taj Mahal.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy attended a Republic Day parade in India's capital of New Delhi on Saturday (January 26).
Sarkozy, on a visit to India to cement business and political ties between the two countries, was the guest of honour at the annual parade, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Devisingh Patil.
Sarkozy joined thousands of spectators at the military procession to watch parading elephants, camels and tanks in a ceremony to mark India's military might.
After the Republic Day parade, Sarkozy visited Taj Mahal, the world renowned 17th century Mughal monument built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz in India's northern Agra city.
There was intense media speculation that Sarkozy would be accompanied by his girlfriend and model turned singer Carla Bruni at Taj Mahal, but the French President showed up alone.
Taj Mahal made from white marble is a UNESCO World heritage site and one of the universally admired masterpieces.
One of the finest examples of Mugal architecture, the monument attracts 2 to 3 million visitors every year. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
