- Story Text: Indian Coastal police on Thursday (February 16) registered a case of murder against the Italian ship crew that allegedly killed two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast in the country's south.
Two fishermen were killed when a navy security team on an Italian merchant vessel opened fire on a boat it mistook for pirates off the coast of Indian territorial waters.
Sam Christi Daniel, Commissioner of police at Kollam where surviving fishermen sought help, told reporters late on Thursday that the Italian guards would be taken into custody upon their arrival.
"It is in Neendakara and we have registered a case. Ttomorrow ship will be arriving in the night and we will be taking action tomorrow morning. That is my intention," said Daniel.
The cargo ship arrived at the Neendakara harbour early hours of Friday (February 17).
A diplomatic row flayed between the two countries as Italy's ambassador was summoned to a meeting with a senior official at the Foreign Office to explain what had happened on Wednesday (February 15) night.
The ambassador was asked to ensure the crew of the ship cooperates with Indian authorities, a Foreign Ministry official said.
Italy's Navy said the fishing boat had approached the Napoli-registered vessel Enrica Lexie in an aggressive manner.
Meanwhile, the government of Kerala has offered compensation of 500,000 rupees ($10,123) to the fishermen's families. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
