India's army set up a makeshift hospital in Kathmandu on Tuesday (April 28) to treat victims after a devastating earthquake destroyed buildings and roads, killed more than 4,600 people and injured thousands.
The government has yet to assess the full scale of the damage wrought by Saturday's (April 25) 7.9 magnitude quake, unable to reach many mountainous areas despite aid supplies and personnel pouring in from around the world.
Commanding officer of Indian Army Medical Corps (AMC), Lieutenant Colonel R.K. Yadav, said that India had established four hospitals - one by Indian Air Force and other three by the army.
"We were given this land yesterday and within 6 to 7 hours we have set up this small hospital. We have contacted army authorities here, the civil authorities here, medical college people here that our hospital is ready, our OT is ready for operation. We have liaised with the KGMC that is Kathmandu Medical College people and their medical team is here and they have given okay. I hope by evening we will start operating here," said Colonel Yadav.
Yadav said that the hospital could treat up to 20 patients at a given time and had an Outpatient Department able to tend to 150-200 people daily.
One of the first patients was an Indian tourist from Kerala, who arrived into the hospital. His legs had been caught under debris.
Nepal's Prime Minister Sushil Koirala told Reuters the death toll could reach 10,000, as information on damage from far-flung villages and towns has yet to come in.
International aid has begun arriving in Nepal, but disbursement has been slow, partly because aftershocks have sporadically closed the airport.
The home (interior) ministry said the confirmed death toll stands at 4,682, with more than 9,240 injured. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
