- Story Text: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with leaders of Pacific nations on Wednesday (November 19), saying the occasion marked the beginning of a new era of communication.
Modi arrived in the Fijian capital Suva following his visit to Australia where he attended the G20 summit and held talks with his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott on a comprehensive economic partnership agreement.
The Indian prime minister received a traditional welcome at Albert Park in Suva before meeting the leaders and representatives of 12 Pacific Island nations.
"I am told that this is the first such meeting between India and pacific nations. I assure you that this is not the last one. This is, in a way, a new beginning of our communication and connecting with each other," said Modi at the gathering.
Later in the day, Modi addressed the Fijian parliament announcing a $5 million grant to strengthen the islands industry as well as a $70 million line of credit to build a co-generation power plant at a sugar mill.
The fund will boost Fiji's struggling sugar industry, once worked by thousands of indentured labourers from India under appalling conditions.
Modi is only the second Indian prime minister to visit Fiji, despite Indians making up 40 percent of the population, after Indira Gandhi in 1981.
