- Story Text: The oldest living tiger in Jaipur zoo, in India's northwestern Rajasthan state, breathed his last on Friday (September 03).
The 24-year-old tiger named Ramu died following a cardiac arrest due to his old age.
According to the zoo authorities, Ramu came out of his cage for a stroll in the morning all hale and hearty but soon collapsed after walking some distance.
The authorities rushed to his enclosure after observing him motionless for a few minutes, only to discover him dead.
A post-mortem was carried out by three veterinarians, who verified the cause of death as heart failure.
It was a dismal sight for the enthusiastic visitors who used to come to the zoo to get a glimpse of the aging big cat.
"When we had come here the last time, the entire zoo used to shake with his growl. But now we are feeling awkward in his absence. He was the oldest among the animals, like their grandfather. So, we are feeling sad that he is no more. We are feeling as if something is missing here," said Ritu, a visitor.
Ramu, who was born in the same zoo in 1986, had become a major crowd-puller in Rajasthan state because of his age.
On an average, tigers have a life span of 10 to 15 years when out in wild and live for 16-20 years in captive state. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
