Police on Tuesday (January 12) confirmed the death of five members of an Indian origin family from Australia in a road accident while traveling from New Delhi to Taj city Agra.
The family, settled in Australia, was on a vacation in India and was traveling on the Yamuna Expressway that connects New Delhi to Agra, home to the Taj Mahal, when the accident occurred on Sunday (January 10) afternoon.
According to police, the car they were traveling in was at high speed when one of the tyres burst, sending the vehicle crashing into a safety barrier and then flipping onto its roof.
"An NRI (non-resident Indian) family from Australia was on its way to visit Taj Mahal when one of their vehicle's tyres burst. Four died on the spot while one passed way later," said senior superintendent of police, Rakesh Singh.
Local media reported that Anamika Dutta, 45, her daughters Neetika and Pipasa, aged 12 and 15, and sister Sonia, 25, died at the scene, while her 20-year-old son, Tirvijai, died in hospital a short time later.
The two survivors, Anamika's husband, Rupendra Dutta, and her father, N.K. Paliwalm, remain in hospital.
Singh added that the police would take up measures to check over-speeding on the expressway.
"We are setting up radars and would deploy more officials to check over-speeding. We are also in talks with other authorities to put up studs (speed breakers) and signs in the accident prone areas," added Singh.
