A 25-year-old Indian man has married his 80-year-old grandmother because he wants to take care of her.
Narayan Biswas married Premodas Biswas in Panchpara, West Bengal state.
On Monday he said: "I took the decision after I had read that an old woman was forced to eat a half burnt dead body because of hunger since her relatives had left her. So I decided to get married to my grandmother to take care of her."
Grandmother Premodas, her back bent with age, said she was happy with her young husband, who she married in a traditional Hindu ceremony. Her first husband died more than 30 years ago.
High school graduate Narayan, who farms rice fields and also works as a tutor, went ahead with the marriage to his grandmother despite objections from his family and the stigma of social boycott.
"He did not listen to us," said his mother, Meena. "God only knows what happened to him. And he said that he has to get married to his grandmother. He got married but the villagers refused to accept it. His father threatened to commit suicide but he (Narayan) said that he cannot see an old woman suffering this way and he wants to set an example by marrying her and taking care of her."
Local officials say marrying a blood relation is illegal under the Hindu Marriage Act, but they have no plans to take action against the couple.
