- Story Text: Mahendra Dhoni blazed 183 not out from 145 balls -- the highest one-day score by a wicketkeeper -- to power India to a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka on Monday (October 31).
Dhoni lashed 16 fours and 10 sixes after being promoted to number three as India raced to 303 for four in 46.1 overs chasing Sri Lanka's 298 for four.
The win gave India a 3-0 lead in the seven-match series.
The 24-year-old Dhoni has a reputation as a big-hitter and produced a dazzling display of power to make light of the challenging chase.
"It was a long session for me particularly when I kept batting for 50 overs at a stretch, and then when I went into bat, I batted for 46 overs. The main thing were cramps, they were troubling me, but (John) Gloster (team physiotherapist) did a pretty well job to overcome that with supplements," said Dhoni in a news conference after the match in Jaipur.
Dhoni erased Australian Adam Gilchrist's 172 with 10 sixes and 16 fours in the third one-day international to equal the second highest one-day total by an Indian batsman.
Indian captain Rahul Dravid, while hailing the performance said that he would concentrate on the matches ahead.
"Challenge for the team is that now we can forget our past performances. It really doesn't matter what we have done, this match is over. What's important is next two days and how we prepare for the game in Pune. We are very happy with our performances, we played some great cricket in this series and we have done that by concentrating on our processes, concentrating on practise and what we wanted to do lead up to matches and that what we do," said Dravid.
Jubilance swept across the household of Dhoni in eastern Ranchi city where his parents had been glued to the television since the start of the match.
"He's doing well. He scored over a century. We really felt good that he played well," said Paan Singh, Dhoni's father.
India, chasing Sri Lanka's 298 for four, coasted to 303 for four with
5 overs to spare, taking a 3-0 lead in the seven-match series.
The 24-year old Dhoni's score was the second highest by an Indian, behind Sachin Tendulkar's 186 not out against New Zealand in 1999. Former skipper Saurav Ganguly also made 183 against Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup.
