- Story Text: Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi said on Saturday (November 17) her country needed to move forward in educational standards to enable it to catch up with other developing nations.
Suu Kyi was speaking during her week-long tour of India and at the country's information technology hub, Bangalore.
She sought assistance in bolstering her country's academic system that is still wobbling towards democracy after the dissolution of junta in 2011.
"And what we would like to do is to raise the standards of education in my country, so that our young people might be able to take their rightful place in the world. But the teaching of science I am especially interested in, because we have to keep up with modern developments and particularly because my country has fallen so far behind other countries, there is a need for us to make progress quickly to catch up with others," said Suu Kyi.
During her stay in New Delhi, she met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid and chief of India's ruling Congress party, Sonia Gandhi.
On Wednesday (November 14) she delivered the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Lecture organised in memory of India's first Prime Minister, where she urged the host country to stand by Myanmar in the 'last phase' of a long journey towards democracy.
Suu Kyi became an international symbol when she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, for championing democracy in opposition to dictatorship enforced by a military junta that held her under house arrest in Myanmar.
Her election to parliament in April helped to transform the pariah image of Myanmar and persuade the West to begin rolling back sanctions after a year of dramatic reforms, including the release of about 700 political prisoners in amnesties between May 2011 and July. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
