- Story Text: Special prayers are held at the Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, in India's eastern Kolkata to mark the 10th anniversary of her death.
On Wednesday (September 5) the 10th anniversary of Mother Teresa's death people from all walks of life and of all faiths attended a special morning mass at the Missionaries of Charity which she founded in India's eastern city of Kolkata, for a special morning mass.
Prayers and floral tributes were offered at the grave of Albanian born Mother Teresa, who made Kolkata her home and dedicated her life to the service of poor and destitute children.
Sister Nirmala, Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity, said nuns and Mother Teresa's followers thanked God for the selfless life of the 'Saint of Gutters', who died at the age of 87.
"Message for the people (is) let us praise and thank God for the Gift of Mother that she used her life for the love of God and service of his people. Let us pray to Mother that she may inspire all of us and obtain for us also the grace that we also may make our lives something beautiful for God by using it and loving him and loving his children especially the poor, the neglected, those who have no one, those who have no where to go," she said.
Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa in October 2003, paving the way for her canonization, or being declared a saint.
Mother Teresa qualified for beatification after Vatican officials acknowledged that she was responsible for a miracle in which an Indian woman was cured of stomach cancer through her intervention.
The Church had also declared September 5, the day she died, as Feast Day - a day for joy and celebration.
Mother Teresa came to India in 1929 at the age of 18 and took up teaching and became an Indian citizen in 1948.
She started working in the slums and later set up her Missionaries of Charity, which was approved by the Vatican in 1950.
The organisation now runs more than 500 charity homes in over 100 countries.
Mother Teresa received several national and international awards for social service during her lifetime. They include the Magsaysay Award in 1962, the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, the John F. Kennedy International Award in 1971 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and the top civilian award of India - Bharat Ratna in 1980. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
