Summary:A former American civil rights lawyer, Mrs. Constance Baker Motley, was sworn in as a judge in the Federal Court for the southern district of New York and thus became the first African-American woman to sit on the federal bench. The 45 year-old judge was appointed to what was regarded as the best district court in the United States a court which had produced some of the finest judges in the country.
