- Story Text: Furloughed U.S. federal workers queuing up for a free meal at "Chefs for Feds", in downtown Washington D.C. on Friday (January 25) welcomed President Donald Trump's announcement of the agreement to end a 35-day-old partial government shutdown.
A three-week stopgap spending plan, passed by the Senate and heading to the House of Representatives, now sets up tough talks with lawmakers about how to address security along the U.S.-Mexican border, with Democrats appearing unyielding in their opposition to Trump's wall.
But many workers lining up at celebrity chef Jose Andres' emergency kitchen, called on both sides to really work toward a definitive deal and expressed fears over a new shutdown after February 15th, in the event of a no-deal situation.
With polls showing most Americans blamed him for the painful shutdown - the longest of its kind in U.S. history - Trump embraced a way out of the crisis that Democratic House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi had been pushing for weeks.
EPA employee Amanda Russell thinks this type of measure should be avoided in the future. Russell joined the Environmental Protection Agency five months ago after finishing graduate school in May 2018 and her savings were running out. She told Reuters she was really looking forward to getting back to work and seeing her colleagues.
Located between the Capitol and the White House, "Chefs for Feds" will continue to serve free meals to federal government employees in need for a few more days. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
