PERRY SPEAKING TO JOURNALIST (SOUNDBITE) (English) "A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL" DIRECTOR AND STAR, TYLER PERRY, ON IF HE'LL MISS PLAYING MADEA, SAYING: "No, because I have all these wonderful videos to look back on, all these great moments to look back on, and look at what it's done for all these people, all over the years, so, no it's going to be a really wonderful memorial." MADEA CHARACTER ON MOVIE POSTER / PERRY SPEAKING TO JOURNALIST (SOUNDBITE) (English) "A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL" DIRECTOR AND STAR, TYLER PERRY, ON WHY THE MADEA FRANCHISE HAS SUCH A HUGE FAN BASE, SAYING: "I think it's because she reminds them of just, grandmas gone by that are not around anymore and I think that's part of it. And it's just wild fun, it's nothing deep, you don't have to think too hard about it, just laugh and have a good time." VARIOUS OF PERRY ON CARPET VARIOUS OF "A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL" CO-STAR, ROME FLYNN, SPEAKING TO JOURNALIST (SOUNDBITE) (English) "A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL" CO-STAR, ROME FLYNN, SAYING: "I think you can connect with her. It's the humanistic connection that you get from Madea. It doesn't feel tamed. Because as humans and people, we're naturally not that way, we're not tamed and sort of, conditioned to be a certain way and Madea's just kind of, you know she has no filter. She says things that maybe people want to say, you know. And people love her because she loves you but she gives you tough love. She teaches you things and makes you feel like you can trust her. And it's hard to gain someone's trust through a film, you know? But Madea has kind of consistently drawn crowds into the movies." I mean, we are a patriarchal society. And you know, women for so long, we've been taught to be very submissive, very quiet, just kind of go with the flow. And then you have a woman like Madea who just literally lives by her own rules. And so I think that's what people see and that's what speaks to people. And then just being from the south, you know, I grew up in New Orleans, I grew up in the Third Ward. My nana Carol and my grandmother Sarah, like they both were the matriarchs of our family and had little quick snaps like that. And would do anything to protect and defend their family. And so I think that's why a lot of people really flocked to Madea and even if she's a little bit much at times, she does have really great values, for family and even spiritually and I think that's what really speaks to a lot of people." "A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL" CO-STAR, QUIN WALTERS, ON CARPET (SOUNDBITE) (English) "A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL" CO-STAR, QUIN WALTERS, SAYING: "Everybody loves Madea for the same reason everybody loves Cardi B. She's real, plain and simple. Like that's as real as you can get, right? No holds barred, speaking the truth, like, calling people out on their stuff, and there's something attractive about that. There's something that makes us gravitate towards that realness. That's what Madea is." WALTERS ON CARPET (SOUNDBITE) (English) "A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL" CO-STAR, QUIN WALTERS, SAYING: "Honestly, I see myself in Madea. I don't know how good that is to say. But the part that's so silly about Madea, I feel like that's part me. I have a silly part to myself and I just feel like I can relate to that, like, just say whatever." "I'm turning 50 this year and for the next 50, I'm going to do something different and I don't want to be her age playing her, so now it's time to let it go," Perry said.
In the film, Madea and the family journey to Georgia, where they unexpectedly plan a funeral.
He first introduced Madea in his 1999 play "I Can Do Bad All By Myself." Perry has previously credited his mother and aunt as helping inspire the iconic character.
