- Story Text: Working from his small shop in the old city of Ramallah in the West Bank, Shehada Shalalda was carving a violin plate.
Delicately tuning the strings, the 28-year-old aims to get the job done within the next 3 months.
It all started 13 years ago for the young luthier whose talent almost went unnoticed.
Shalada, who went to a local music school at the age of 15, was invited to visit Italy, the country he calls "mother country for violin."
"My tutor saw that I was interested in this subject. He invited me to Italy in 2008, I was 15-year-old then. In 2008, I went to Italy. There, I started to learn how to make a violin. I made two violins also to learn how to fix and make the instrument and such details," Shalada recalled.
His skills then earned him a place at Newark college Britain, where he spent three years.
Shalada, believed to be the only violin maker in the Palestinian territories, gained popularity overseas after competing in a violin making competition in Italy.
"When someone holds a Shalalda instrument, he would know who Shalalda is. Also, I sell instruments through these exhibitions, meet violin dealers and make a deal with them to buy from me musical instruments," he said.
Shalada also said that his violins are exhibited in Paris, London and New York.
And in neighbouring Jordan, his pieces are highly appreciated by musicians, such as Abdelrahim Dukhan, who got to know about Shalada from an orchestra colleague.
"It (violin made by Shalada) looked different and had a nice colour and its wood was really beautiful," said Dukhan, a member of the Jordan's national orchestra. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
