- Story Text: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a welcome ceremony hosted by Vietnamese President Nguyen Phu Trong in Hanoi on Friday (March 1) followed by bilateral talks, one day after a second summit with U.S. President Donald Trump collapsed over sanctions.
The two sides gave conflicting accounts of what happened, raising questions about the future of their denuclearisation negotiations.
Trump said two days of talks had made good progress in building relations and on the main issue of denuclearisation, but it was important not to rush into a bad deal. He said he had walked away because of unacceptable North Korean demands.
However, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told a news conference on Friday, hours after Trump left Hanoi that North Korea had sought only a partial lifting of sanctions "related to people's livelihoods and unrelated to military sanctions".
During his time in Vietnam on Friday, the North Korean leader also met with Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and National Assembly Chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
Kim is scheduled to leave the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi at around noon on Saturday (March 2) and depart from the country via the Dong Dang railway station on the border with China in the afternoon, a Vietnamese foreign ministry source said.
