Summary:Botswana, the former British Protectorate of Bechuanaland, was officially declared independent on September 30 1966 and its new President, Seretse Khama, sworn in. Sir Hugh Norman Walker, Queen's Commissioner for Bechuanaland, and the Duchess of Kent attended the ceremonies. As a large crowd watched, the Union Jack was lowered and Botswana's new blue, black and white flag raised.
