- Story Text: Migrants and refugees travelling north through Europe left the Hungarian border town of Roszke, Hungary, on Friday (September 11) as they were transported by bus to other parts of the country.
Many of the refugees stranded at the border have waited days to be registered, while conditions at makeshift frontier camps are basic.
There have been growing signs this week of Hungary's inability to handle the flood of more than 170,000 people this year seeking sanctuary in Europe from war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa.
On Thursday (September 10) alone, police captured a record 3,601 migrants on the border, according to data on the police website.
Medical care for the crowds at Budapest's railway stations has been provided entirely by volunteers.
Not far from the camp at Roszke, prisoners are working to complete a massive fence that is due to seal Hungary off from Serbia.
Hungary, a key transit country for migrants trying to reach richer and more welcoming countries such as Germany and Sweden, said it expected to finish the fence by early October to help stem the flow.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff said Budapest planned "different rules of the game" from next week, with penalties for illegal entry, accelerated asylum procedures and possible expulsion back over the border. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
