- Story Text: Director and writer James Gunn has been rehired for the third 'Guardians of the Galaxy' by Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios, according to a Deadline article that a Disney representaive confirmed as accurate to Reuters.
The 52-year old was fired last July after historic tweets resurfaced in which he made jokes about paedophilia and rape.
The cast of the successful franchise, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper, had openly opposed the move and wrote an open letter after his firing in defense of the director. Most notably, Dave Bautista, who plays the gruff alien Drax, threatened to quit the franchise if Gunn was not reinstated.
The previous two 'Guardians of the Galaxy' films, which follow a group of ragtag aliens led by the self-named Star-Lord (Pratt), made over $1.6 billion worldwide.
The story of his reinstating was first broken by film website Deadline. Their report was confirmed to be accurate by a Disney representative.
The reports were also confirmed by Gunn himself who tweeted "I deeply appreciate Disney's decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all. I have been, and continue to be incredibly humbled by your love and support." - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
