- Story Text: Migrants and refugees walking along a busy Hungarian road attempted to shelter from the rain as they continued their journey towards Austria and Germany on Thursday (September 10).
There have been some buses to take migrants from Roszke near the Serbian border to transit camps in other parts of the country, closer to Hungary's western border with Austria, but many prefer to make their own way.
Most migrants want to avoid registration in Hungary, which involves giving fingerprints, because they fear that registering for asylum in Hungary may prevent them from leaving for Germany and other, wealthier, countries.
But, their only other option is to continue their journey illegally through back roads in a desperate attempt to reach Austria, a stepping stone towards Germany.
Police said that those collected by buses were headed to a transit camp near the city of Gyor, almost 300 kilometres north, where they would be registered for asylum.
While an Iraqi family had only plastic ponchos to protect their children from the rain, a group of Syrians took shelter in a bus stop along the road.
They said they had not been offered any transport.
"We need a taxi. Because of the police, no one came near us, no one has spoken to us and told us what to do … or even a bus to take us to Budapest," said Ali.
Another in the group, who did not wish to give his name, said people were wary of the police.
"From Serbia, to Hungary, to Budapest, people have to face the police, they hold you for three days. Everyone is going through the forests, homeless, sleeping on the floor, and get lost. From Damascus until here it's taken 12 days and no one has helped us. We're homeless and fleeing killing," he said.
Hungarian police captured a record 3,321 migrants on Wednesday (September 9), the highest daily figure so far this year, above the 3,313 detained last Thursday (September 3), data published on its website showed.
The new arrivals brought the numbers of refugees and migrants looking to move on towards western Europe from Serbia through Hungary to nearly 22,000 this month alone.
Tens of thousands of people, many of them fleeing the war in Syria, have streamed across the border since Austria and Germany threw open their borders at the weekend. Almost all have headed for Germany, with only hundreds seeking asylum in Austria.
The Hungarian army started military exercise on Wednesday to prepare its soldiers for a role in guarding the southern border, state news agency MTI cited Chief of Staff General Tibor Benko as saying. The country is planning to send soldiers to help police patrol the border where thousands of refugees and migrants arrive from Serbia every day. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
