- Story Text: Austrian police on the border with Hungary said on Saturday (September 12) they were in contact with their colleagues in the southern states, to give them advice on how to cope with a possible influx of migrants from Slovenia.
Migrants and refugees crossing the border from Hungary on Saturday were met by Red Cross volunteers before continuing their journeys by bus.
Speaking to Reuters in Nickelsdorf, a police spokesperson said authorities were expecting a large influx of people later in the day.
"If we talk about today from midnight, then we have had around 2,000 people crossing the border. We also currently have information that in the next two or three hours, two or three larger groups of people, around 500 people each, will arrive, which means that by the early evening we expect the number to reach just over 3,000," said Helmut Marban, a spokesperson for the police in the state of Burgenland.
He said his team was exchanging information with authorities on the country's southern border, in case there was an influx there too.
"We are of course talking to and in contact with the police in other states, in Styria and Carinthia, to exchange information. These discussions are already ongoing and we want to share our experiences. And just as we have received extra staff, the opposite will also be the case," said Marban.
When Hungary brings in tougher immigration rules on Tuesday (September 15), migrants may start trying to cross further into Europe via countries like Croatia and Slovenia, which border Austria's southern states.
More than 170,000 migrants have crossed into Hungary from non-EU Serbia so far this year. Many try to avoid being registered in Hungary for fear of being stranded there or returned to the country later in their journey across Europe. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
