- Story Text: On Monday (May 6), U.S. President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen will head to the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, New York, to begin serving his sentence. In December, Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison on charges related to campaign finance violations, tax evasion and lying to Congress.
In his guilty plea, Cohen claimed then-candidate Donald Trump directed him in 2016 to pay hush money to two women who alleged affairs.
Since pleading guilty, he has publicly turned on Trump, telling a U.S. House of Representatives committee in February that his former boss was a "con man" and "cheat".
Cohen began cooperating with federal investigators soon after the April 2018 raids on his office and hotel room. He eventually pleaded guilty to multiple crimes, including campaign finance violations in connection with payments of hush money to silence two women who claimed to have had sexual relationships with Trump.
The women included Stormy Daniels, a porn actress whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, who later sued Trump unsuccessfully to end her hush money agreement.
Trump has denied having sexual relationships with the women, and said his campaign did not collude with Russia. Moscow has denied meddling in the 2016 election.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia inquiry concluded there was insufficient evidence to show a criminal conspiracy and opted not to make a conclusion on whether Trump committed obstruction of justice, but pointedly did not exonerate him. Attorney General William Barr has said he and Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department's No. 2 official, then determined there was not enough evidence to charge Trump with obstruction.
