- Story Text:Renowned Japanese architect and Prtizker Achitecture Prize 2019 laureate, Arata Isozaki, met with French president Emmanuel Macron on Friday (May 24) in Paris.
Macron honoured Isozaki at the Elysee Palace for his contributions to architecture, saying he had a "rare talent," and that Japan had produced some of the best architects in the world, with seven others from the country having already won the Pritzker prize.
Macron also spoke of the architectural project of rebuilding Notre-Dame cathedral, saying he took "full responsibility" for the contentious decision to rebuild it within five years.
87-year-old Isozaki was deeply influenced by the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which occurred when he was a teenager, and says he builds with the idea that while buildings are temporary, they should be aesthetically pleasing.
He was one of the first Japanese architects to build overseas, and has been praised for making a statement that transcends national boundaries through buildings that are simple in design, but also appear to redefine the feelings of space in people's surroundings.
His notable works include the arts complex Art Tower Mito in Ibaraki, the Ceramic Park Mino in Gifu, and the Museum of Modern Art in Gunma, Japan, and his works experiment with several architectural styles.
Having designed more than 100 buildings including in Doha, Coruna and Turin, he was awarded the Royal Gold Medal by the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1986.
The Pritzker Architecture Prize, also referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Architecture," was first awarded in 1979. Past laureates include Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando, I.M. Pei, Oscar Niemeyer and Zaha Hadid.
