- Story Text: Same-sex couples attended a mass wedding banquet in Taipei on Saturday (May 25), a week after Taiwan's parliament passed a bill that endorsed same-sex marriage.
Couples walked hand-in-hand down the red carpet to cheering crowds waving rainbow flags on Ketagalan Boulevard, in front of Taiwan's presidential palace.
Drag queens lip-synched to songs, as go-go boys danced to celebrate the LGBT community's legal acknowledgement, a first in Asia.
More than 360 same-sex couples married on Friday (May 24), according to government data, after years of heated debate over marriage equality that has divided the self-ruled and democratic island.
Same-sex marriage is not recognised by Hong Kong and neighbouring China, which regards Taiwan as a wayward province to be returned to the fold by force, if necessary.
