- Story Text: Hundreds of migrants who had crossed from Greece into Macedonia stood in line on Monday (September 7) to enter a provisional camp set up near the town of Gevgelija, close to the border.
In addition to food, water and medical care, migrants who register in the camp receive a permit allowing them free passage through the country valid for 72 hours. Families with small children were among those queuing in the hope of being able to continue their journey to western Europe.
The Macedonian government has organised trains twice a day to the north of the country, where migrants cross into Serbia on their way to European Union member Hungary, but with thousands arriving from Greece, authorities have also provided additional buses to take people north.
For most, the ultimate goal is Germany, where they hope they will be able to apply for asylum and build a better life.
But the last leg on their journey before they get into the European Union's Schengen passport-free zone is Serbia's border with Hungary, which Hungarian authorities have reinforced by constructing a fence and stepping up patrols, arresting hundreds who try crossing it on foot. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
