- Story Text:French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute on Wednesday (June 5) to 71 French Resistance fighters shot dead by the Gestapo on the day Allied forces landed in Normandy but whose bodies were never recovered, as he marked the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
After the port city of Caen was bombed by the Allies, the local Gestapo officers decided to kill all remaining political fighters in its prison who could not be deported to camps to the east.
French Resistance fighter Bernard Duval, who was deported to a German camp the day before the massacre, told the story of those he knew. Their bodies were never recovered.
Relatives of those who were executed attended the event to mark the moment in history, alongside Macron.
The D-day landing of some 150,000 Allied soldiers on the beaches of Normandy marked the start of the Battle of Normandy, which killed some 110,000 people, including more than 20,000 civilians.
Macron is due to host a Franco-British ceremony with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Ver-sur-Mer on Thursday morning (June 6), before attending a Franco-American one with U.S. President Donald Trump in Colleville-sur-Mer later in the day.
