- Story Text: Austrian authorities removed on Friday (August 28) the remains of 71 dead migrants, including children, found in an abandoned lorry.
The refrigerated truck was found by an Austrian motorway patrol near the Hungarian border just before lunchtime on Thursday (August 27), with fluids from the decomposing bodies seeping from its back door.
It had been left abandoned on the roadside of the highway, which leads from Hungary to the Austrian capital Vienna.
The truck is at a customs building in the village of Nickelsdorf, which has refrigeration facilities and where forensic specialists clad could be seen wheeling body bags away.
Police on Thursday said the bodies would be transported to Vienna on Friday for further examination and to help establish their identities and cause of death.
In a news conference, Austrian police suspect that a Bulgarian-Hungarian trafficking ring was behind the deaths.
They added that they found a "Syrian travel document" in the truck among the decomposing bodies. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
