- Story Text: American expats joined Mexicans outside the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City to protest the treatment of migrants in detention centres on Friday (July 12).
The protest comes after a government watchdog found "dangerous overcrowding" and "standing-room-only conditions" at a border patrol facility in Texas.
U.S. officials say they have been overwhelmed by tens of thousands of mostly Central Americans crossing into the United States and turning themselves over to border agents.
Protesters are calling for a more humane immigration system in the United States and to end the automatic detention of migrants.
President Donald Trump has responded to renewed criticism over his handling of the migrant crisis on the U.S.- Mexico border by writing on Twitter that if immigrants unhappy with conditions at detention centres should be told "not to come."
